Harp the Highlands and Islands 2014!

I am so excited that our group will be setting out on this year’s tour in just a couple of days!

David and I are looking forward to collecting everyone in Edinburgh before heading out for an entire week of beauty, fun, and tunes before some of us will participate in the Cromarty Harp Village –

bet you wish you were with us – we do!  Maybe next year –

until then, just remember, we’ll be seeing things like this.  We’ll be posting along the way as we get a chance so you can see what we’re up to!

Basking in the glow

Summer is a wonderful time.  Not only is the sun shining and the warmth of the days calls us to spend more time in that glorious light, but perhaps more importantly…it’s festival season!

I am basking in the afterglow of participating in the Somerset Folk Harp Festival in a summer full of enjoying the thrill of the middle of the summer Games and Competitions season, while getting ready for this year’s Harp Camp, and gearing up for the Harp the Highlands and Islands tour for this year*. Picture1

Summer is just chock-a-block with great opportunities to learn, to play, to meet new friends, to see old friends, and to just enjoy our music!  I hope you have had to occasion to avail yourself of the discovery, the camaraderie, and the pure joy of making music.

Summer is fleeting though and soon we’ll be in the bitter cold of winter when there are fewer opportunities to get together, time will be spent alone, practicing for Christmas gigs, and the shortened days seem to suck some of the joy from the day.  With the waning daylight we will miss the carefree days of playing through the summer.

Find your opportunity to join with others, to make music and have fun!

*there’s still time – if you want to get in on this year’s Harp the Highlands and Islands tour, get more information here or send me an email.

Don’t miss your chance! Harp the Highlands and Islands 2014 tour

We’re running out of time and space!  Don’t miss your opportunity to join us on the 2014 Harp the Highlands and Islands Tour.  We are looking forward to seeing beautiful Scotland and its breathtakingly views!  See it with us – we are planning a great time for all.  Whether you are a harp player, play another small traditional instrument, or just appreciate Scottish music, you’ll enjoy a wonderful time.

Each year we build on the previous outings leveraging the resounding success of our previous Harp and the customized Scottish Highlands tours. We include music of course, but also history, stories and anecdotes that enhance your visit and make the scenery come alive!

We have expanded the tour this year to encompass the magnificent route through to the west coast of Scotland, the source of so many wonderful tunes.  And we are so excited to be able to be working with the Cromarty Arts Trust to offer you the opportunity to expand your trip and add on participation in the Harp Village.

This will be a veritable musical feast – I hope you’ll come along.  There are only 2 seats remaining – details and additional information on www.jeniuscreations.com/

Join us on the Journey!

Summer is coming!

It’s about that time to plan your summer – especially your harp summer!  Of course the best choice would be to join us in Scotland on the Harp the Highlands and Islands tour in September!  But to be ready, I’d highly recommend you participate in the Ohio Scottish Arts School harp program.

This year’s instructors include the amazing Sue Richards, Ann Heymann (a must see for anyone interested in wire harp!) and Corrina Hewat.  In addition, Charlie Heymann will be teaching those elements that make us better musicians not just better harpers.

From the OSAS website:

The Scottish Harp classes will focus on:
• Basic harp technique for beginners and intermediates.
• Repertoire at all levels, including tunes for competition sets.
• Scottish style, including ornaments, lilt, and dance types.

The nylon/gut harp classes will study Scottish dance music, airs, and songs, focusing on ornamentation, Scottish style, accompaniment, and learning by ear.

Ann Heymann leads the class for wire strung and historical harps (bray harps welcome) and Charlie Heymann leads an afternoon “band class” for all instruments.

Afternoons will include lectures, practice time, and playing in sessions. Classes will be available for beginners who have played for a few months, intermediates, and advanced players.

Returning in 2014: An incredible option to assemble, finish and string your own 27 string wire harp (assisted by Charlie). Please contact Ann for details: annheymann@gmail.com

Evening jam sessions offer students the chance to develop accompaniment patterns and learn more tunes.

You will have a great time and will learn more than you thought possible – hope to see you there!

Clarity … with time

Some of you let me know that you thought my post last week was exciting but hard to follow.  So, I wanted to take the time to be clear  – because I don’t want you to miss out!

We have worked with the Cromarty Harp Village to bring you the chance to extend your visit to Scotland to participate in a tremendous workshop.  After spending the week with us seeing beautiful Scotland, you can add on an additional night of dinner, bed and breakfast accommodation, transportation (and more to see) to and from Cromarty, and the three days of the incredible Cromarty Harp Village events with four amazing tutors – Corrina Hewat, Patsy Seddon, Mary Macmaster, Heather Yule and Una Monaghan – all for just an additional $800.

Take part in the entire Cromarty Harp Village experience including a Friday night concert, Saturday and Sunday workshops for all ability levels, a fun, informal session on Saturday night and a final afternoon gathering on Sunday.  And don’t forget that this year, there is the newly commissioned Homecoming piece by Corrina, Patsy and Mary that you will get to play and perform!

Both the Harp the Highlands and Islands Tour and the Harp Village have limited seating – and when we’re full, that will be all for this year, so be sure to book soon.

Leave the details to us and just enjoy visiting Scotland and then immersing yourself in an incredible weekend workshop.

UPDATE! Harp the Highlands and Islands Tour UPDATE!

This year, for the first time Cromarty Harp Village Opportunity!

We have wanted to meet up with Corrina Hewat and the amazing Cromarty Harp Village in previous years, but this year, everything worked and we are SO excited that we will be able to offer this add on to the 2014 Harp the Highlands and Islands Tour!
Why not extend your visit to Scotland and participate in this incredible opportunity?  The Cromarty Harp Village brings incomparable tutors and an incredible setting.  You cannot miss an opportunity to participate in a weekend workshop with Corrina Hewat, Patsy Seddon, Mary Macmaster, Heather Yule and Una Monaghan from Ireland.  I am breathless just thinking about it!
Adding on to your tour would be immeasurably better than flying over on Friday and coming right back Monday.  And of course, it would be so much easier to come with us than to plan your own visit. Leave the details with us!
For just $800 you can extend your tour an additional night, have an additional day of seeing more off the beaten path wonder while we go to Cromarty.  You will enjoy the entire Cromarty Harp Village experience including a Friday night concert with dazzling harp playing of Corrina Hewat, Una Monaghan, Patsy Seddon and Mary Macmaster and exquisite storytelling and harp from Heather Yule. Saturday and Sunday experience workshops for all ability levels.  In addition, enjoy a really friendly, fun and informal session on Saturday night and a final afternoon gathering on Sunday.  When you are full of great harping, we will return you to Edinburgh either to continue your visit or to return home.
BUT WAIT!  There’s more!
This year’s Harp Village will feature a brand new commissioned piece of music written by Corrina, Patsy and Mary. This will be taught to all the harping students over the weekend and will be performed by all the participants on Sunday afternoon in a very special concert. The theme for the piece is Homecoming.
Harp Village has limited seating (as you might imagine with that lineup!) so be sure to book soon – don’t miss out!

Harpa 2013

I am so fortunate – lucky really – to have participated in the 2013 Harpa Tour.  It was a wonderful opportunity to travel and work with some amazing musicians. I’m back now and still reveling in the glow of memories.

Here are just a couple of photos (which the other performers shared on facebook) that really sum up the fantastic vibe we had going – a great group, a lovely place, and lots and lots and lots of tunes!

Isn’t just playing for fun the point!

Of course playing for an audience is a real joy too!

We had a successful kickstarter campaign and warm appreciative audiences at every venue.  What more could you ask!

Look for the CD later this summer! There will also be a DVD that will be a snapshot of the fun we had.  While Beth says never again – I think you might be surprised…

If you’re looking to have your own Harp Adventure this year – there isn’t much time remaining to get in on the Harp the Highlands and Islands tour! Go to http://www.jeniuscreations.com/harp-tours-of-scotland/tour-2013/ for details and information.

Just Six Months!

The 2013 Harp the Highland and Island Tour will be leaving in just about six months.  I am so excited and really looking forward to seeing some fantastic sites and playing some amazing tunes, visiting old friends and making new ones.  You will learn so much about the heritage of the Scottish music you love and drink in the sites that help you really get the tunes into your heart.
